The British government says Russia must be responsible for the “fake trial” of two British citizens who have been sentenced to death in the People’s Republic of Donetsk who proclaimed themselves in East Ukraine for fighting against Russian troops.

Aiden Aslin, 28, and Shaun Pinner, 48, were sentenced on Thursday by a court run by a rebel supported by Russia in the DPR, which was not internationally recognized. Brahim Saadoun, a Moroccan citizen, was also sentenced to death.

British government minister Robin Walker said it was “illegal court in fake government” but London will use “all diplomatic channels to submit cases that this is a war prisoner that must be treated accordingly.”

He added that “Russia needs to be responsible” for their fate, in line with “Moscow’s responsibility under the Geneva Convention, for the treatment of war prisoners”.
