In Ukraine, now illegal playing Russian music in public or imports a large number of books from Russia and Belarus. The new prohibition ratified by the Kyiv Parliament includes “products from artists or writers who are or citizens of the state aggressors.” The artist in accordance with the bill was also prohibited from performing in Ukraine.

Ukraine television presenter and producer Ihor Kondratyuk collected more than 25,000 signatures for petitions that prohibited concerts featuring Russian artists in Ukraine even before the Russian invasion on February 24. For him, the new law seems to be the next logical step to protect the country.

“This is part of defending Ukraine as what our warriors did in the struggle against aggressors. Russian artists must not be liked in Ukraine until relations with Russia are once again friendly, “he told DW. The presenter added that the Russian Army had used its artist as a type of pioneer since 2014, when it annexed Crimea and launched an invasion to the Donbas region.

Kondratyuk said the streaming and YouTube platform registered high interest in Ukraine -language content. The authors of the new prohibition show that the increasingly large popularity as one of their motivation in writing law but quickly adds that there are exceptions built into laws. They said, for example, there were exceptions for Russian musicians who condemned Moscow’s aggression against Ukraine. Only which artists are released from Kyiv.

Other laws are also ratified. Ukraine parliament has determined that it is illegal to import and sell books from publishers in Russia or Belarus, as well as those in the occupied section of Ukraine.

This prohibition is not only related to works written in one of the places but also applies to works by the writer who is a Russian citizen. Books published before work are released from the ban.

Russian literature published in other countries, however, may still be imported as long as it has been approved. According to the law, the new expert literary board will first look for anti-Ukraine propaganda.

In addition, books by writers who hold or hold Russian passports can no longer be printed in Ukraine. “That is also a natural social reaction to war. Both ‘both’ both ‘and bad’ Russia will not be given access to the Ukraine Book Market, “said Oleksandr Krasovytsky – the owner and director of the Folio Publisher – who helped write the law. However, the prohibition of publishing will not apply to Russian-language books that will be published in Ukraine before January 1, 2023.

The ban was focused, above all, to the writer with a Russian passport, said Krasovytsky. The publisher said the Ukraine expert council would review each case individually. According to law, the work of Alexander Pushkin or Leo Tolstoy, for example, can no longer be imported to Ukraine if printed in Russia; But if they are printed in other countries they might.

That means things will be complicated for some writers in the future – writers like Boris Account, who no longer live in Russia but still have a Russian passport. His works can no longer be imported. But the rule only applies to his works printed in Russia; Those who are printed elsewhere and are found by the expert council free from anti-Ukraine propaganda can still be imported.

There are also exceptions to imports for private individuals. Those who bring less than 10 copies of work that are not on the list of books that are prohibited by the Expert Council and do not intend to sell this free to bring it to the country.

Moscow’s reaction to the law can be predicted that the Ukraine language in daily life is a violation of Russian Ukraine rights, according to Kremlin.
